Resin kits are a bit different but not too hard if you've built other types. Best thing to do is to just jump into it. The new series BSG Raider is the first resin kit i ever did. it was a good learning experience. I hadn't done any sci-fi modeling since my teens and just did a lot of reading and looking at other modelers work in progress threads for ideas on techniques to learn as much as I can. Practice makes perfect ( or at least improvement). And ask questions. You can pick up a simple resin kit and experiment with it to get a feel or, even better, get a kit that you see other people doing and copy what they are doing. That's what I did when I built the new raider. The main difference is in the gluing of the parts (epoxy and CA versus modeling cement). The painting is the same as plastic models.
Mike Salzo sells the studio raider as well as the shuttle.
Doug you have come a long way since the teens, and that you have jumped in full bore. I guess reading and watching gave you a lot of ammo because your work as a rookie (safe to say since you haven't made a model in maybe decades) your work is a slam dunk.
I am very familiar with Mike, I almost went in as a partner 50/50 in ownership of the patterns of the Viper, and Raider. He does awesome scracth build work also.

I just glued them in tonight but didn't have time to hook them up yet. the cockpit is a mess of wires now.

This installment is titled "The GOOD, the BAD, and the UGLY"
First the good.
The painting of the greys is going pretty good. There's a couple of minor spots of bleed through but all in all not bad. I may need to touch up the paint on the top in a spot or two.
Now the bad.
Some stress cracks appeared on the bottom side around the gun barrels. I thought I had this fixed before but they came back and were visible after the masking came off. The problem is that the barrels cut through not only the surface of the body but also the ribs underneath. This makes it a weak spot and when the body flexes just a bit it pulls apart along the seam. The cracks are as thin as hairs but with so light a color, and with the minimal weathering I want to do, these will be visible so I decided to try to fix them.
And the ugly...
To fix these cracks I dremeled them out and filled the gap with epoxy putty. It's a little drastic at this point with the finish paint on but i figure it's easier to fix now before weathering. Hopefully the epoxy will hold the sides together enough to prevent further cracking. My fear, of course, is that new cracks will appear in new spots now but I'm hoping with some really gentle handling it can be avoided. We'll see....
Now I'll have to mask off the front area and repaint, hopefully for the last time.
Here's the overall of the bottom side and how I layed out the grey colors there.

To bad about the cracking parts, but the rest of it looks great. Do you think the cracking might be from the temperature in the work area it is stored, like maybe to hot? Just a thought, well a question really. Love the progress.

I'm pretty sure it's just from it flexing there at least I hope so.

LOOKS AWESOME!
The "ugly" pics look like the Basestart after I've been driving it
Looking forward to more! Do you have a cool base/stand in mind? Or is it goingt to be something simple. Such a awesome build/ship demands a rockin base - don't you think?!

I'm thinking that a mirrored base that allows you to see the bottom side will be good for this one. This one's so wide and flat that it's nearly impossible to see the bottom unless i mount it at an angle. Hmm That's another idea. Not sure yet. I'll probably have a better idea after it's finished.

No worries about thinking what to do. I have the perfect plan, make a 2nd one, and mount it upside down.

Great update!
I really hope you're able to get rid of these stress lines somehow.
The rest of the Raider looks just GREAT!
