Dutch Cylon helmet build

Hi all..
My first

build!
I ordered the vacuum formed helmet parts from Starbuck.
The Hyperdynelabs scanner is WAY to expensive ($205,-
are you kidding?)
so I bought a $40,- one online...and everything came in the mail today..OMG I was so excited!
Felt like christmas!
First thing to do is start cutting away.
Where the frack did I leave all my tools? okay, after some gathering, I started with the resin
eye scanner.
The red resin scanner piece gives a nice diffusion to the led's so I wanted to use that one.
wrong! the radius in which it was bend did not match the eye piece.
After heating it up and deforming, it fitted nicely to the rear of the eye piece.
Next problem, the Led board radius does not fit the eye piece as well.. Frack again!
Well, that's what you get for buying a cheap one I guess.
I'll take it to work tomorrow and detach the Led's from the circuit board.
It will stick too far backward to wear the helmet anyway..I'll use some wires.
I'm off to bed.
I'll keep you posted on my progress

Great start, Wupsje! Thanks for posting up the pics and the info. Can't wait to see more.
Where did you get that scanner, if you don't mind saying? (And you are right, Hyperdyne's is a lot of $$$)

I've got it from Jupiter electronics:
http://www.jupiterstore.com/servlet/the ... EYE/Detail
Sorry, I see it was $49,- well, still beats $205,-
I've uploaded a video to You tube:

The original lens is not very good, not the right radius and it's not diffused.

Ah ha! I didn't know that Jupiter did Cylon stuff! (I knew about the Knight Rider

OF COURSE)
Very cool. I'll have to add them to the eye thread as a option for builders. Thanks for the lead.

Hey looks very cool so far, and maybe a something to try. If you can do this with out breaking any of the leads or bulbs try bending the LED's up, and see how that work. More light will show, and might give you the arch you need, or at least more room to work with.

Good start. If I counted correctly I only get 24 LEDs on your scanner, the original had 32.
If I may, did you check the cylon store, I have a eye scanner for sale that fits in a CORA helmet and is vary wearable.

Sorry $175,- is still too expensive for a couple of LED's (which cost about $0,02 a piece)
I know it only has 24, but with some good diffusion it should be no prob.

Good luck with your build from me anyway!

@Wupsje ... Zeta's eye also outputs the "eye sound" (to speakers not included). It's electronic innards are not
just to push LEDs like other kits.
Does your Jupiter eye allow enough room to wear the helmet still? What if you were wearing glasses too... still room do you think? (I HAVE to wear my glasses if I'm going to walk around with the LIMITED vision the costume has.

)

Thanx for all the response
@Groupleaderzeta
My goal is to build this with a limited budget.
Example: I found a company that will spray paint the chrome for $220,-
@Cylon-knight, For the eye sound I'll probably use an ipod
And the board does stick back, so I'm planning on using 3mm LED's (the print has 5mm LED's)
which i can put
inside the red resin slit, and wire them to the board.
I'll mount the board on top of the eye piece... I'll post pics as soon as I'm done with that.
Grtz,

$220 seems a bit on the high side, but then I am used to doing chroming in buck and that brings the rate down a lot.
If you are good to great painter there are do it yourself silver chrome. These cans I have heard a few people sound off about and for the cost they like it, and they followed up you get what you paid for. Meaning lower cost, lower quality. The amount you get on ordering the special they have you only need 1 of the 3 cans. You could sell off the other cans on here I bet or eBay. I have used their products in the past I like their stuff, but I am have about a 40% failure rate with clear coating. Since I am not a painter, and people that have used their clear coat say it runs very hot, and it is tricky to work with. I am not sure if Killer Cans use a clear coat. What my problem was the chromed finish was dead on 100%, but the clear coat was cloudy, and it wrecked the results, so I would have to take the coatings off back down to the styrene. and then rechrome it. Just a guess here but I bet 1 can will do two helmets with plenty to spare.

Any automotive urethane cleat topcoat will work. Paint it black with black lacquer primer. Clearcoat then let dry for a few hours then alsa mirror chrome. For best results. You can re seal but you'll loose the shine but if you go that way let me know, theres a trick to bring it back.
There is a guy that use to work for alsa he make a better product. Shrapnel.

On another note. Zeta's eye is worth every penny. I still plan to do a hyperdyne and an alternate. I think Zetas meets my needs, but other than - the diffusion and the mowhawk slit issue I have it's really good. .... and it's made by a cylon!!!
His warble is a stellar added bonus.
Welcome to the BUILD!!!
