It was 28 years ago last night then our favorite showed air on ABC. The death came way to soon.

A big night! Us kids were incredibly hyped up looking forward to the premiere and on the night (a Sunday) I was only allowed to watch the first hour because it started at 20:00 and my English parents always watched Masterpiece Theater which started at 21:00 (only one TV in the house back then).
I managed to go see the theatrical version in 1979 so didn't have to wait too long to see it all. I had the novelization, photostory and the marvel comic special so knew the story well. I didn't see the full premiere version until the 2003 DVD release.

We as a group here are lucky enough to have some great video editors. Has any of the artist thought about using clean film footage and replace the youtube video with a pristine version? Thanks for sharing the video Grog.

I had a friend that used to capture DVD segments for me, and I did my own editing, but he moved out of the area.

The only trick will be the logo at the end... that's not from the show like the rest. But, it is very easy to remake I did a Star Wars crawl intro and the concepts in it could be reworked to remake that logo fade in/resize.
That was beautiful, but daggitgone it, why did they have to use the cropped version? Is only the theatrical movie available in that level of HD quality?

Just for a little addition to the celebration... I've taken a few existing montages including the September 17 intro and edited them together, with some ABC Sunday Night Movie kitsch thrown in for that opening-night feel.
(See below... video slightly improved.)

Replaced that with a revised version which salvages Ernie Anderson's "Tonight..." from the premiere as far as possible. I had to boost the volume a couple thousand times and reduce the noise, but it was buried in there.
