I think the words "thank you" are not enough for what you've done! *Bows down*
It gives even more insight of how an original scanner was built back in the day...
I knew they'd used some kind of diffusion in front of the bulbs but never knew how they did it exactly... now I know for sure, thanks to you!
Very well done my friend.

Honestly I also enjoyed doing it. I hadn't taken it quite that far before. Really pleased how easy it is to take apart and put back together. Makes sense from a production standpoint, too.
I've gotten alot of info and photo reference from you guys on this forum and if I can return the favor, I am happy.

So, as is fairly obvious, I'm sure, the diffuser is very thin paper, almost like tissue. I'm sure there's a term for it that I don't know. And the red "lense" is completely transparent.
I shot alot more photos, but they are similar to these ...with the bulbs lit in different places, etc. If there's something specific anyone wants to see that's not here, ask and I'll see if I have any shots showing it.

The tape behind the red plastic looks like some kind of masking tape to me.
And the red translucent plastic seems to made from the same material as the decoders used to decipher the tech specs on the back of G1 Transformers packages...

The diffusing material is some sort of sheer paper rather than tape, at least with any adhesive. Much thinner that masking tape. Almost like tissue paper. Almost. There's no hint of there ever having any kind of adhesive on the paper, even dried out masking tape shows hints of adhesive. The red lense is completely clear red like lighting gel or probably the sample you suggested Red Eye.

Interesting... I wonder if we could locate this material somehow.
For my helmet, I used three layers of diffusion foil in front of the visor area. It looks very close to the real deal IMHO.
