Paper Craft Armor using Bazookajo and other sets I've found

Post by greatsaje » Thu Jan 13, 2011 7:01 am

Hi all,

Thanks to the recent extreme wet in Queensland, my current armour was destroyed due to the fact it rained heavily while my first coat of resin was curing (over 200mm overnight) and deformed the underlying paper former.

So first tip, Do not resin your armour while in the midst of a Tropical Monsoon.

Once I have picked up the pieces I will start to post some pics and videos of the process and you might even see my ultimate project, the Steampunk Cylon.
For starters you will need to get the main parts of the armour from Bazookajo http://www.bazookajo.me.uk and have a look at the instructions and build process.

I have found that some of the armour is a tad too small for me and I have started to separate the individual pieces so that it can be scaled and arrange in Photoshop. (will post when finished)

Initial Build Stage -- --------->

What you will need:-

About 50 sheets of white A4 card, I use 200gsm card as it will safely got through my laser and inkjet.
Craft Glue, I use a clear resign type glue that dries within 2-3min, it

That 2nd video is some great stuff. Loved how he just tossed the freshly coat torso piece off to the floor, and it landed perfect.

I just finished pepping my helm (which does seem a tad snug by the way). Though I think I will be building more armor pieces before going to the resin phase. I have some experience using polyester resin, and have found that you can improve curing in less than ideal conditions by varying your hardener ratio in the mix. It is not advised though.

As for sizing, I thought I just had a big head. maybe not. maybe its resizing itself for US letter paper despite my instruction not to.

who knows. Are there specific dimensions someone has taken from screen used props?

I don't know about any measurements from a screen used Cylon helmet... I don't remember seeing any around the web.

Your build sounds cool - any pics you can post?

The helmets are snug very snug. Here is a helmet for sale on eBay at this moment but it is a tad over sized because it is a master.

It looks very nice and crisp.

Are you going to buy it?

Another prototype helmet from Icons Replicas, which also never went into full production, was sold at propstore.com:

Yeah I saw that a few weeks ago, but it is not much more than just a replica helmet with a fancy name behind it.

No sorry I don't but if I recall the price was 10K, and that is just crazy for a replica helmet.

good to know about the helmet being snug by design. I likely wont need to pad it as long as I dont lose my hair anytime soon.

I got the neck piece built ant that just barely gets over my head as well.

The only armor I have been as of yet unable to locate are the shin pieces. Anyone have a pdo or pdf of them?

I plan on doing a build llike this as well. I did a boba fett helmet this way and then took a silicone mold from it and cast it in fiberglass.

If the pep files are similar to the ones i used, you should be able to scale it up or dowm when you priint it. So you can print it at 105% to make everything a little bigger.

Would it be possible to get some basic measurements from someone who owns a screen used suit?

Bazookajo's files were PDFs if I remember right. You could scale them easy with Acrobat Reader or Acrobat's printer settings.

I have posted the link blow for the individual bits to the Cylon helmet to make it easier to scale in Photoshop (pdf scaling tends to run off the page in some areas) and I have also modified some pieces to work better in builds, i.e. there are 2 pieces that join on a curve and tend to be difficult to join without a seam.
