Undersuit Spacing?

Post by Lt Rhea » Mon Apr 11, 2011 2:19 pm

Does anyone know the spacing between ribs on the Cylon undersuit? Particularly the body ribbing. Thanks!

I had asked goldcylon that question, and he says one inch.

Wow, really that much...there's 40 ribs on the body section with one inch between each, except I'm guessing the very top and bottom ribs. Okay, thanks for the help. It will make re-figuring this pattern easier. The prototype I'm making the pattern from only had 26 body ribs!

Okay now I'm thoroughly confused. I sat down to try and alter my pattern today but now I'm not sure about it. If there are 40 ribs on the body section, with 1" between each making 39 spaces, if I only allow 1/16" for the piping to take up (which it will probably be closer to 1/8" or more) that means that the piped body section would be 41

Well the suits were worn by TALL men, remember. And the ribs go from just about the crotch to the arm pits... it is more than just "the waist" area... the entire torso really. And when it is worn I don't think a full 1" probably shows... it has some give and take to it.

*HEAVY SIGH* .... oh my ... "the under suit" so complex, but so cool! lol

From what I understand, the plum material is stretchy, when at rest the ribs might be touching. When the suit is worn and the torso was pulled up to the armpits then the ribs spread apart. I would measure how tall I needed, then knowing there are 40 ribs cut the material strips at a little over 1/2 what figure you got for the hight of the torso section (this don't include seam allowance), then when worn the ribs spread apart.

This is kind of what I was thinking I would do. This will be displayed on a mannequin but even at 6' tall the body of the suit would be too tall for it, going up to or above the head, with 1" between ribs. That would have meant the fabric would have to do a LOT of slouching!
