Cylon vocoder unit has an ID now

Post by GoldCylon » Tue May 22, 2007 9:02 am

Since I have made contact with Peter Berkos and he is sending me the original owners manual to the vocoder he used to make the Cylon voice the race will be on to make the Cylon voice. I don't want to open the flood gates to everyone to make this a race to make that Cylon voice. It might cost a few bucks to those trying to out bid each other on units that might be listed on eBay or some other place. I am open to suggestions of what to do here. Do this as a group, or a free for all. I am waiting for feedback from anyone that would like to speak up, or be part of this.

I'M JUST ANXIOUS AND CURIOUS TO FIND-OUT!!! IS IT OR ISN'T IT THE EMS STUDIO-SYSTEM VOCODER 5000, OR NOT (IT BETTER NOT BE THE SENNHEISER VSM-201 VOCODER AFTER ALL, WHAT WOULD CHRISD THINK??)??!!! IS IT ANY EMS OR NOT??!!! WHATEVER I CURRENTLY CAN'T AFFORD IT, SO I MIGHT AS WELL KNOW ASAP!!! DOES HE MENTION THE RING-MODULATOR USED AS WELL??!!! AND I ALSO WONDER IF THEY ALSO USED SOMETHING CALLED THE "MARSHALL TIME-MODULATOR" (I'M NOT SURE IF THAT'S SOME SPECIFIC RING-MODULATOR OR NOT, JAMES EARL JONES USED ONE FOR CREATING THE VOICE OF DARTH VADER)!!! SO PLEASE DO HURRY AND TELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Cylon Vocoder is an EMS Vocoder!!! Also possibly used was the Marshall 5002 Time-Modulator!! Was an electric saxophone used with or instead of an unknown synthesizer or electric/electronic keyboard??

Well to tell you the truth, the brand and model number he gave me I can't find a thing on Google about at all. It might have been a simple typo, but also an other thing he said doesn't match the typo, the color of the manual. The colored manuals I have seen aren't that same as the maybe typo. The manual went out today, so in a day or two the answer will be known.

If it's not the EMS Vocoder 5000 or any other EMS model, how about the EMI Vocoder? Or the Synton Syntovox 221 Vocoder? BV12 Vocoder? Bode 7702 Vocoder? Elektor Vocoder? ETI Powertran Vocoder? Doepfer A-129 Modular Vocoder? R. Barth KG Musicoder? CRB Diamond-Moon Voco/Strings? FMD VOC-10 Vocoder? Goldstar GS-3000 Vocoder? Moog 16-Channel Vocoder? Stoffel Vocoder? Krok 2401 Vocoder? But NOT the Sennheiser VSM-201 Vocoder??!!!

I say post the entire manual online. There's no need to keep the info a secret. Also, get as much info as possible...include all the equipment needed to create the Cylon voice as well as the vocoder settings.

YES! YES!! YES!!!! Also I hope you find-out what was used as the carrier input brand/model, the ring-modulator brand/model, if they used the Marshall Time-Modulator and if more than one model which one, microphone brand/model, amp brand/model, speakers brand/model, and all of the wiring, etc. brand/model!!! And make sure you get the notes (keys) used!! It's my belief that for the silver Cylons they used either the two lowest E or F keys, or 2nd and 3rd lowest, if lowest is too low. And for the gold Cylons the two lowest C keys, ditto if that's too low as well!!!

I have no problem posting the manual, once it arrives, but what he told me in the model number is most likely a typo, so till the manual arrives I will not get hopes on, or a wild search for something that ISN'T on the web (I searched already)

OK I have the original manual in front of me that Peter Berkos used to make the Cylon voice with. This is going to make some happy, and others not, but I hope that with the answer now intact what was used, that now the method he used to make the voice can be cracked open. I'll scan the manual when I get the old scanner hooked up to the PC. Peter also send an 8 X 10 photo of the Colonial Movers ship, I have never seen before, maybe he took it.

Ok the manual that is only 7 pages long, but gives great detail on how to operated it, but doesn't say what to do to make the Cylon voice. Maybe as I chat with Peter he might recall some of the steps he using the Sennheiser Vocoder VSM 201 to make the Cylon voice.

YOU'RE JOKING, RIGHT??!!! You mean to tell me, Chris, and the rest that it was the Sennheiser VSM-201 Vocoder after all?? Chris used to own one and couldn't even come CLOSE to producing the Cylon voice with it!!! And all vocoders have their own unique sound so how do you or Mr. Peter Berkos explain that it sounds like an EMS and not a Sennheiser?? Plus you said the vocoder used wasn't mentioned on Google (typo) both EMS and Sennheiser are!! What did the typo call it (examples: Sennheiser VSM-301 or 101)??

They're are other ppl in the sound department and Mr. Berkos lasted only 7 episodes (was he FIRED??!!!), so I now HIGHLY DOUBT he's the one responsible for the Cylon voices (he may have helped, but someone else is IT)!!! WE NEED TO CONTACT THE OTHERS and Mr. Michael Santiago to VERIFY his claim (since I DON'T BELIEVE IT)!!!

Sorry GoldCylon, but this isn't over yet, not until the rest (of those alive still, that is) and Mr. Michael Santiago have been contacted and given us their knowledge (with PROOF)!!!

By the way a manual doesn't prove anything, anyone can get one claiming it's the one!!!

Mr Peter Berkos is given credit for the Cylons in seven episidos, because only 7 episodes had new original voice work. The other episodes that had Cylon voice work were replied over, and over, and over. Mr Micheal was only a single person that supplied the voice, he never claimed, or has claimed to anything but a voice to the Cylons. This manual is the same in the link below, expect a small note about LEDs. Give me a bit of time, I don't want to over run him with a shotgun load of questions. He is an Academy award winning sound effects expert , he has a better chance of making the sound happen more than just about anyone out there.
Sorry guys but I feel his is a true connection to the person that made the original Cylon voice. I'll update you as I hear more.

I believe it may be possible that Mr. Peter Berkos used the Sennheiser Vocoder for another (movie?) project and due to his age is confused, since it CLEARLY is an EMS Vocoder used and NOT the Sennheiser (ChrisD and other experts have listened to audios and have attested to this FACT)!!! Now is it the 5000 or the Synthi??!!!

"EMS, manufacturers of the legendary VCS3 and Synthi A synths, also made vocoders: the 5000 is the most visually striking (matching the synths perfectly -- it was even called the Synthi Vocoder in one version), and is the most fully-specified of the range. It also features a comprehensive patching system, enabling the analysing and synthesizing filters to be connected in any order. Incidentally, the 3000 and 2000 are still available new from EMS, the 3000 at

GoldCylon, could you please now tell us what that TYPO was that Mr. Peter Berkos referred to was since it's NOT in the owner's manual and operating instructions for the Sennheiser VSM-201 Vocoder??
