This question is for Skullbeast, Flightldr, and Jclayman........What kind of experience/education do you have to have to work for a special FX / prop house?

My son is a awesome artist and he is pursuing a carrer in the automotive paint industry, (Auto body and paint) and wants to do custom airbrush artwork on old school hotrods and choppers. He does most of the graphics on our airplanes....no formal training just been taught by my dad who is a landscape/portrait artist. He has alot of basic fundamentals...color mixing, shading, and understanding of depth, negetive space, he also makes some truly amazing drawings etc......(I sure he knows more than that ...I'm not an artist) the kid (25) is pretty good and I tried to encourage him to get into tattoo art but he really does not want to do that.

any sugestions?

That seems to always be the case with hollywood....that was what I ran into when I was younger....I wanted to be a cinematographer but i did not know the right people and after years of trying I became discouraged and gave up.

At that time the only school was UCLA film school and there was a waiting list that extended for years.

I will see if I can post some more of his stuff later.

Yea, kinda true, but the younger you are and the more willing to be abused, the better, at least early-on. Having multiple skills, willing to do stuff on a project that's not what you 'really want to do', helping someone in a pinch over a weekend or something... all things that can't hurt, that I've seen people do to cultivate a position in the field. Living in the area and hustling helps alot, too.

Living in the area is def. a must!....I was born and raised San Fernando Valley, went to grade school with Johnny Whitaker (Jody from Family Affair for all of those to young to remember the show) , went to High School with Val Kilmer ( Didn't know em personaly just attended the same schools at the same time) but the Valley was a bedroom community for hollywood. My parents owned a house in Chatsworth a block south of Lucy and Desi's Ranch. so my infulence and interest in a movie carreer was pretty strong and my dad knew a few guy's in the industry but his friends were set decorators, painters, electricians (Union) so I really had no kind of connections in the field I wanted to pursue.

10-4 on the youth abuse and the hustle. lol

My son is a pretty good artist ...I'm not a artist but more of a technical model designer and builder. I lack the vision to be an artist.

I just thought I would ask you guy's since your active in the industry ...The Automotive painting is a tough gig ...since the advent of American chopper and Boyd Cottington show ......everybody that knows what a spraygun is wants to paint hot rods.

I also remember when John Dykstra was in Van Nuys...I sent him a letter once way back when, (late 70's)expressing intrest in becoming a fx modeler but never got a responce...I guess he was just to busy being the King of FX at the time even for some words of encouragement.

My son has the abillity to create art....I can re-create such as the scale airplanes and in the past, model spacecraft, costumes, props and the like that's why I'm here.

My thing is the processes and the machinery, some cad, mostly old school hand drafted plans ( still have the old school drafting table with all the drawing tools) lol.

P.S. My son was very impressed with your artwork Skullbeast.

Yea he was jazzed with the Iron man pics, but really impressed with the art work
