The Battlestar Galactica story originally began back in 1978 with a "made for television" film, shortly followed by a TV series created by Glen A. Larson. The show lasted for just one season, and, due to a lot of good publicity and reviews, was very highly rated. Sadly though, the show was cancelled, mostly because it was just too expensive to continue and had massive production costs.

There was an attempt in 1980 to bring back the series, but it only lasted six episodes and was highly critisised and has never really been regarded as a real part of the Battlestar Galactica Story.

In 2002, the Scifi Channel announced that it was planning to recreate Battlestar Galactica and produce a new 4 hour mini-series which was to be based on the pilot for the original 1978 TV series. The mini-series aired on Scifi in the U.S. in December 2003 and achieved very high ratings indeed. Following this, the first series of thirteen episodes was produced and premiered in the U.K. on SkyOne in October 2004. Again, the ratings were extremely high and it was very highly regarded by fans of the original series and general scifi fans alike. When the show aired in the U.S. in January 2005, it became the Scifi Channel's highest rated original series.

Battlestar Galactica 2003 tells the story of twelve tribes of human colonies who are attacked by a race of machines that they once created. Forced to flee from their homeworlds and with their race in the brink of extinction, a convoy of civilian ships and the 50-year old Galactica form a "rag-tag" fleet which searches for their new home. Legends says that a thirteenth tribe separated from the twelve long ago and settled on a very distant planet. Not knowing for sure if this is just a legend, they begin their new mission, to find the planet that legend calls "Earth."
