TOS Helmet on Psych

Post by 137th Gebirg » Sat Feb 25, 2012 11:33 am

Hi, all...

I brought this up in another thread in the G1980 forum and after finding some good screencaps, I decided to start a new thread and not hijack the old one.

So here's the thing - in an episode of Psych (5x03 - "Not Even Close...Encounters") one of the guys' old grade school friends has a geek room with, among many other things, a TOS BSG helmet. The weird thing about it is, even though it looks immaculately painted (although not built) and is said to be "screen used" (pretty sure it isn't), it seems a little "off". Design wise it's damn near spot-on, and whoever built it definitely tried to make it work but it seems a little "elongated" to me. It's been a while since I owned and sold off one of these myself, so I may be wrong, but I'll let you all be the judges. Here are the pics:

WOW, it is NICE. But I agree, it is something fan made - not screen used to BSG. The shape is close, but not quite right. But the colors, the bird, wow - all sooooo cool. I don't think the ST:NG Visor is 1:1 either, but again it is a very nice fan version.

Did it break in the bottom pictures? Or is that a hing of some sort??

I'll have to see if the show is on NetFlix or something. Looks like a fun episode.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's a bit off. Yes, it was actually a break during a foot-chase scene. It seemed to be planned as far as I could tell.

I'm genuinely curious about this one. The paint job and, as you mentioned, the bird piece are all perfect, but the helmet is just weird. There are plenty of accurate resin garage kits out there that would have worked. Why spend the extra effort making this kind of shell? Either way, yes, it was a great episode (as most Psych eps are from what I've seen so far). It's a good show and I just had to share this particular one over here for obvious reasons. :salute:

So glad you found the pics to share, thank you!

I looked again, and I think the most "off" part is the vertical black spots on the helmet. They are set too far back. They should be more in front of the ear, not way behind it. Also the brow of the helmet at the top should overhang as much as the chin... the chin is too far forward (an under bite as it were). All that considered vs. a 1:1 screen used helmet - I think it actually wound up pretty cool, it has a more of a motor cycle look to it that would look very cool with a tinted lens enclosure (like an Airwolf helmet or something). This helmet is something that I could see have a hose plug into it/seal to the uniform/life suit and actually give life support - more like the nuBSG Viper helmets did.

Maybe the "not quite right" look was done on purpose to avoid any copyright stuff? Even though it is still OBVIOUSLY a "wannabee" classic BSG Viper Helmet ;)

To me it is clearly someone else's version of the Colonial helmet. It is clearly NOW screen used, but never on Galactica. The colors do really jump out also. Metallic like paints were used, and highlighting to make the darker areas jump out. The hinge isn't a normal item in a Viper helmet, that was something the builder, or the production crew did it was a drop that caused that. It might have been dropped off camera, and that was a quick fix idea, but never on Galactica.
So of the things I see that don't sit true to me. The top is pulled back and lowered, the chin bar to far forward, the read left and right ear fins to wide. The hinged jaw section, and the coloring. I can't see a show like this having that type of budget to totally make a scratch build helmet, but maybe take two helmets and tweak them into one. One smaller, and one larger, and come up with what they now have.
That would be a cool helmet for a relaunch of the original series with a new twist of a old helmet.

Could this have been something like a prototype thrown together for the 2001 Singer project?

Here are a few additional screencaps, if you don't mind.

I've also noticed that the lower lightbar detaches and fell off during the chase scene (see photo 6).

They've also repaired it rather clumsy towards the end of the episode.

Nevertheless, I too like the look of it.

The helmet that was made didn't have that type of look to it, but a very canny cross over look from both 78, and the 03 version. Picture the 03 design, with the fins of 78 on the side over the smooth side.
