Another wrench in the works for this... wouldn't it make sense for a capital war ship, like a Battlestar to have a planetary offensive weapon? Because, you know, PEW PEW. Just sizzle the outpost from space and fly on by.

True, especially since they have SDI laser Twizzlers that can detonate a bunch of nuclear missiles in the ionosphere.
