Don't know it's been posted here before, but CineMagic had done a great interview with Richard Edlund, explaining how scenes like the nebula effect for the Nova of Madagon in "Saga of a Star World" or the exploding Mount Hekla in "The Gun on Ice Planet Zero" were done.
