I just ordered my first Cylon Outfit
Hi guys,
I've been a member for a short while, just browsing every now and then. Been considering building a cylon for a while, not to wear, but as a mannequin in the corner of the room.
I saw a cylon helmet here for sale on ebay in Australia and thought I'd ask the guy if he has the complete outfit.
"Yes", was his reply "and it's moulded from an authentic costume that toured the country in 1980"....
Wow!! A real cylon !!! So very quickly a deposit was sent to him so he can build me a complete outfit made of fiberglass. Yep....I was very excited....until I decided to check up on this guy.
So imagine my huge disappointment when his name came up again and again on this very forum.....for all the wrong reasons.
Yep, you've probably already guessed his name.....Bentley O'Toole.
Now, it's only been a few days since I paid the deposit, and he did tell me it will take a few weeks to make the costume. At this stage I'm hoping that he'll make good with his end of the bargain. We'll see in a few weeks.
I shoulda checked up on him before I gave him any money, but I felt kinda confident that it will be OK, as his feedback was good on ebay. Here is one of his listings....it looks good to me, so let's hope and pray it turns out well.

I am not bagging this guy, as he was very helpful with any questions I had regarding his items. I'm just hoping all turns out well. When....or if....I get my costume, I'll let you guys know.....
cheers

Re: I just ordered my first Cylon Outfit
I got my armor from him years ago.
There were some serious complaints of buyers in the past but now he seems to deliver what people actually ordered.
Good luck and hope to hear back from you very soon!

Re: I just ordered my first Cylon Outfit
Hiya, I ordered the helmet from him last week he had it on Ebay, he followed up with a email saying it had the complete set and sent photos. He was very quick to reply to my questions. I'm keen to get the set myself so he listed the complete set for me which is what you must have seen. He also said it would take 4 weeks which sounds right. Anyway I'm waiting for the helmet to arrive before getting the rest. It's now 3 days past the estimated delivery date. I sent a email he replied and said he hadn't posted it yet
but he was quick to respond and said he had some issues which got in the way.
Interested to know how you go and will update here myself.

Re: I just ordered my first Cylon Outfit
REDEYE...what did you think of his outfit?? Is it good or bad? Is it really cast from a 'real' cylon?? Any quality issues etc?? And what exactly were the issues that buyers had with him? I read here on this forum that he would take their money, not deliver, then 'resell' the same item to someone else, take their money and so on and so on....???
MADCYLON...I saw the ad he had for the helmet, that's when I asked him if he had the full outfit. He said yes, but it would take a few weeks to make one. Hopefully we both receive what we ordered. If not, he's gonna get a 100 kg angry cylon knocking on his front door!! (yep....that would be me!!)
So, to the people out there that actually received cylon armor from him, is it any good?? He told me it was cast from an authentic cylon way back in 1980 when it was here for a television promotion. If that story is indeed true, it should be a good outfit.
Like I said, we'll see when, or if, I receive mine....

The quality is great but you have to work on it a bit to guarantee a smooth chrome finish.
And yes, it certainly looks like it was molded from screen-used armor parts.
Here are a couple of photos from my set:

Redeye....thanks for that. It's comforting to know that the outfit looks to be molded from an authentic cylon and the quality is great. Being fiberglass, I expected a bit of work to be done for a perfectly smooth finish.
What brand of chrome paint did you use? A lot of the chrome paints out there don't really end up looking chrome, more like silver. Yours looks pretty good. After doing a bit of research, I have come across "Spaz Stix Chrome" paint, which by all accounts is probably the best and most realistic chrome paint available. There are a few chrome paint comparison videos on youtube and this one tops the list. The photos are great, thanks.

Re: I just ordered my first Cylon Outfit
Received my helmet today from Bentley, I was a little concerned after your posts. His communication with me has been great and the helmet looks ok. Will need some preparation work but that was fully expected. A couple of issues and its probably normal as I have not worked with moulds before but the mouth grill does not fit and will need about 5mm of filing to fit. The visor might give me some issue as it does not fit, it seems more rounded than what the helmet is. If I hold it flush one side has a 25mm gap. I reckon I can file it down and make it fit I was just expecting everything to already fit nicely. This will also need some modification for my sweeping eye. Pretty sure you will get what you asked for and will probably get the complete set myself although I am super happy with the one/s I have made.

Glad you helmet showed up and you're pleased with it.
Hope you can find a way of acommodate the visor somehow.
Regarding the chrome paint: It was called "Starchrome III" and was very expensive.
But everything came out great so it was well worth the money.
And don't worry about the mouthpiece. Mine doesn't has an accurate fit but when fully chromed up, nobody would notice.

MADCYLON...I too am glad you received what you ordered. Judging by the pics, it looks pretty good. A bit of slight modifications or fitment issues pose no great problem, as you can just sand or file something to fit, or use automotive body filler to smooth out and/or build up areas that need to. Or 2 part epoxy...
Now I can't wait for my full set of armor to show up. I hope Bentley has put his past behind him and will deliver on his promise.
As for the chrome paint, judging by all the reviews I've seen on youtube, "Spaz Stix" brand chrome paint is probably the best chrome paint available and it's available as a pressure can spray and also for airbrush.

Re: I just ordered my first Cylon Outfit
Still haven't received any armour yet, but not too concerned at this point, as he did say it will take a few weeks. So I scored a major victory on ebay, and got myself NOS Cooper 28 hockey gloves. Yes, I did say NOS. Still in the bag with the price tag from over 3 decades ago (or so)....I opened the bag and phew, man the smell almost knocked me out. I have since found out that you should never store leather in a plastic bag, it needs to breathe.....and this has been stored for over 35 years!!! So I've been airing them outside and sprinkling baking soda all over them to try to get rid of the musty smell. I will post pics up soon.
So does anyone have any idea how to get rid of the musty smell from leather??

Re: I just ordered my first Cylon Outfit
After several emails with Bentley O'Toole, and several "sorry, but......" replies, still no cylon armour has arrived!! GRRRR....I don't know what's going on, but it seems I have been scammed by this guy. That's disappointing, as he was really helpful and seemed like a genuine guy. (until I paid him in full!!)
That's too bad, as I just built a full sized mannequin to display the armor on. I also bought Cooper gloves and the proper boots. Oh yeah, let's not forget the led scanner, and some electronic voice recorders that I'm playing with, to record cylon phrases on. IF this armor ever shows up, I'll let you guys know. But at this stage, it looks like I'm gunna have a fight on my hands.
