Cylon Rifle with Lights and Sound

Finally made a start on the Cylon rifle kit I have had lying in a box for the last year!
Big thanks to Brian for the kit :salute:

First thing was to trim the parts to get them to meet up a little better.
Masking tape and a pencil is good to use as a guide on dark plastic.

Using a Arduino nano, mp3 player, amplifier chip, 1w LED's and drivers for the circuit run off a 7.4v camera battery.
Prototyped the circuit on breadboards and have the code working.
Have since increased the LED's to x6 blue for the barrel (one for each slot) with a white LED for the muzzle.
When the trigger is pressed the LED's will flash blue in sequence along the barrel ending in a white flash at the muzzle and Cylon rifle sound!

Rather than wrapping the acrylic tube in electrical tape I decided to go for a more 'sanitized look' so I went about making a barrel shroud that would emulate the 'look' of the original but also be easier to remove for maintenance if need be.

To fabricate this piece I cut up a black storage container, heated it and shaped it around a piece of pipe then then cut slots. I glued some Velcro to hold it onto the main body of the rifle using E6000.

I build an internal structure from abs and plasticard, I used Velcro to hold the two pieces of the main body together.

The LED's will fit inside a smaller acrylic tube, I bored a hole using a spade bit in the cast resin muzzle piece to accept the tube then fabricated two clear acrylic washers to keep both tubes in place

Cut a section out of the larger tube to accommodate and access electronics, I also fabricated some abs brackets to hold the tubes in place

Mounted the LED's and drivers onto a aluminium rod and soldered the wires

Using jst connectors for the LED sub assembly for future servicing.
I trimmed the clips on the connectors to make them slightly easier to separate.
These are great little plugs!

Cut a recess and added support structures for the speakers, wired speakers to the amplification chip, added jst plugs and installed speaker assembly

Internal support structure for the stock made from plasticard with supports for the battery.
The stock can slide out of the main body to access the battery

Battery contacts made from copper wire, contact ends flattened out with a hammer and holes drilled to allow for soldering.
Wires soldered, heat shrunk and jst connector added

Arduino nano soldered and installed, code uploaded, love this little microprocessor, very compact and easy to use.

Trigger button also fitted and on/off micro switch
