Cylon Hyperdyne labs scanner with diffusion

Post by C.O.R.A » Mon Jun 01, 2009 11:38 am

I took the Hyperdyne Labs scanner and my led holder but this time I pulled the led back a little and added two layers of defusion paper and then a piece of red gel. It now more looks like a bulb scanner. Here is a youtube clip of it in action.

That has a real good look to it that is a much cheaper alternative than going the route of a real bulb that runs so much more money. Great idea to do that. Now how does it look in a helmet in the day light from 20-30 feet away?

It still all fits inside of a helmet?

That looks amazing. What's defusion paper? I assumed the red gel was like that used for concert lighting rigs.

You need to use a clouded sheet of white plastic, and then a red sheet of plastic. That will give you the haze you need to give the correct blur that the real ones have/had.

So, GoldCylon, how much room should one expect in the helmet with the eye electronics in place? I know you can still wear it, but wow, it is pretty much right up in your face, huh?

I am going to craft my own eye (SOMEHOW!) and I know that space it at a premium in the eye area. I was just wondering what is typical. With diffuser sheets that takes up more room too.

I've also ordered a sheet of red diffusion paper, too...

As soon as I got my helmet back, I'll cut it to size and apply it over the LEDs.

Hope the end effect will be as great as C.O.R.A.'s...

It looks pretty good for an LED.

ok now.... What is the best cylon eye scanner currently available :cylon: >Zeta :cylongold: > hyperdyne > or another :erk: I haven't heard of? I have a friend trying to build one as if we would do one at the studio, but i want it to be faithful also.

Neither is really "faithful" as the original scanners use light bulbs - not LEDs. Blubs had the inharent "fade" to them as power is given/taken away. LEDs are very harsh ON and OFF... any fade to them has to be engineered into the electrons that drive them to step power to/from them. The original bulbs were also very hot and dim and used much power... two big reasons that most Cylon builders have gone to LEDs - cooler, BRIGHTER and much less power needs.

I have a Zeta eye and will probably one day get a hyperdyne one to see firsthand if they see eye-to-eye (HaHa - funny me).

Our own member Retro1 sells a 10 LED version of the eye for budget builders... other than him, Zeta and Hyperdyne I've heard/seen no others "out there." If anyone else has POST!
